Every interview, class or deadline somehow becomes a crisis.

Pattern

Sabotaging work or education

This is a repeated pattern of interfering with someone’s work or education by creating obstacles, conflict or consequences around attendance, preparation, performance or opportunity.

What happens in the interaction

The practical routes to independence and future choice become less available. What is lost may be more than one job, class or opportunity; it can be the ability to keep pursuing them.

Effects on the person receiving it

You may hide goals, miss work or classes, lower your ambitions, turn down opportunities or spend energy preventing interference instead of doing the work itself.

An important distinction

Shared responsibilities, financial limits, illness and caregiving can affect work or study. The distinction is whether constraints are discussed honestly and burdens shared—or whether opportunities are repeatedly obstructed, punished or made unsafe because they increase your independence.

If you want to keep track

You do not need to decide what it is. You can note the date and what happened, and read it back later.

See The Pattern

One moment rarely tells the whole story. Look at what repeats over time—and what happens when harm, disagreement or a boundary is named.
