Something you may notice

You were speaking every day. Then there was nothing.

Pattern

Ghosting

Ghosting is an abrupt end to communication without an explanation, response or acknowledgment that the contact has ended.

What happens in the interaction

The ending occurs without a shared account of it. Questions about what changed cannot be answered within the relationship, leaving the person receiving it with no clear information to respond to.

Effects on the person receiving it

You may repeatedly review messages, search for the moment something changed or wonder whether another attempt to make contact would finally explain the silence. Without new information, the same questions may remain open.

An important distinction

Ending contact, blocking someone or creating distance can be necessary for safety, privacy or protection. Nobody is required to remain available or provide access. The relevant distinction is not simply whether contact ended, but whether unexplained disappearance forms part of a repeated pattern of withdrawing and returning that keeps uncertainty or access in place.

If you want to keep track

You do not need to decide what it is. You can note the date and what happened, and read it back later.

See The Pattern

One moment rarely tells the whole story. Look at what repeats over time—and what happens when harm, disagreement or a boundary is named.
